Some of the health issues I am most concerned about is child obesity and breast cancer. Child obesity can lead to many other health issues but also to bullying and low self esteem. This kids are our future and as parents (I'm not a parent but I am the oldest of 6) we should take action and take better care of our kids. As for breast cancer, I recently had a biopsy in my right breast, even though the lump wasn't cancerous, I was scared out of my life. It is really important for women to get checked and to be informed.
I interviewed 3 of my neighbors who's name have been changed in order to protect their identity.
-Dulce is in her early 30's, has 4 kids and one on the way. When I asked her what health issues she was most concerned about she said diabetes and heart disease. She was concerned with diabetes because all of the times she's been pregnant she has had gestational diabetes and was told that she was at higher risk of developing diabetes later in life. Dulce was also concerned with heart disease because she heard in TV that the leading cause of death in females was from heart disease, when she thought that it was from breast cancer.
-Ivonee is in her early 60's lives with her husband and takes care of her great grandkids on the weekends. Ivonee was mainly concerned with cancer (all types) and alzheimer's. She's concerned with cancer because there are so many types and because the treatment can be really expensive. She's concerned with alzheimer'sbecause she is getting old is noticing that she is becoming forgettful.
-Shay lives with her teenage sons and is in her late 30's. She is most concern with heart disease and breast cancer. She's concerned with heart disease because not only is she a female but also African American which puts her at greater risk. She's concerned with breast cancer because she her Mother died of breast cancer a couple of years ago.
Our concerns were mainly similar most of us where concerned with cancer.
I am definitely with Dulce on this one. Heart disease is one of the number one problems in the USA as far as women's deaths. Diabetes can tie into that, especially if the diabetes is adult onset. That can be linked back to lifestyle choices and the fact is, a healthy lifestyle is beyond some peoples reach because of how expensive it can be.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you got checked and are okay!
Cecelia, I can't imagine going through what you had to waiting for the biopsy results. I am so happy that everything was fine though. The women that you interviewed had concerns that most usually have given their age and family history. One of my best friends mother just passed away a few months ago from breast cancer and she had already been in remission for a few years. Its really sad and she was such a nice lady.
ReplyDeleteDiabetes also runs in my family. Knowing this fact keeps me health conscious and aware. In the aspect of health, knowledge really is power. Knowing what diseases run in your family pool can help prevent or at least detect early an array of illness that your previous family member may have lost a battle to. I am so glad your biopsy returned noncancerous.
ReplyDeleteI am also really big on childhood obesity. I feel like the effects are not only physical but mental as well, and both can be long-term. Bullying is a major issue now. I have a whole separate soapbox for how horrible bullying is but I can't imagine an obese child having life threatening health problems and possible low self-esteem then having to deal with being bullied.
I have the same concerns, There are many children out here that are overweight and most of the time its the parents fault, to me it seems like they don't know how to tell their kids no and eat this because it better for you. Im glad to see you okay.
ReplyDeleteHello Cecilia,
ReplyDeleteI also think that heart disease is a very important to address. Having heart disease makes a person more prone to develop hypertension, strokes, diabetes, heart attacks, and more! If we learn to maintain a healthy diet and stay physically active, we can prevent many of these types of diseases from happening in the first place.
As to your case, I'm glad to hear that you were able to detect and remove the lump in your breast even if it was not cancerous.
:)
